Today is Martin Luther King day in the U.S.
Celebrated on the third Monday in January, it is a Federal holiday that commemorates the birthday of civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Perhaps like many, I began my day by listening to Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech. Delivered on August 28, 1963, as part of the March on Washington, the words are still powerful today.
This day is also a day of service. And it is a day we can each renew our pledge to serve others during 2011.
President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and their daughters Malia and Sasha went to a local middle school today, to assist with various projects. Stories of how other Americans are honoring this holiday by sharing their time and talent can be found at the United We Serve blog.
